Northumberland is an amazing county for a holiday or short break - 65 miles of coast, wonderful architecture, amazing gardens, and great walking in the Cheviot Hills. One of the UK 's best kept secret is the eastern coast south of England's border with Scotland. The first visitors to discover Northumberland were the Romans, who peppered the Cheviot Hills with forts. In 122 AD Hadrian's Wall was built and there are many cottages to rent near Hadrian's Wall - great for exploring this amazing Roman barrier between the English and the Scots. You can walk the length of the wall from a holiday cottage in Wallsend-on-Tyne. There are some amazing vacation retreats and bed and breakfast accommodation in Northumberland - from whitewashed hill cottages, castles by the coast, or a fisherman's cottage by the sea - country house hotels are also popular.
North of Alnwick is the small fishing village of Craster - you can buy fabulous cured kippers here and if you are renting a holiday home in the area then you should walk the coast path to Dunstanburgh Castle - a spectacular walk. The beach below Bamburgh Castle has the most amazing shells and the castle is a fairy-tale medieval castle with a good museum. Holy Island is another must if you have found a holiday house to let in Northumberland - Holy Island is accessible only at low tide via the 2 mile causeway. Lindisfarne is the earliest site of Christianity in Britain, and the Tudor castle (domesticated by Lutyens) and Gertude Jekyll's walled garden are also fascinating. Berwick-upon-Tweed is a popular destination - and a centre for those on a fishing holiday on the Tweed - one of the greatest salmon rivers in the UK. If you are in selfcatering near Eyemouth then you will want to eat fresh lobster and fish from the wonderful restaurants near the harbour - one of the great joys of staying in a Northumbrian cottage by the sea is the superb seafood.
