Glasgow is a progressive and exciting city to visit - a short break in Glasgow can give you a flavour of all it has to offer. There are a great range of galleries and museums to explore - and access to Glasgow Museums is free of charge - great if you just want to admire one painting or sculpture. There are other big attractions such as the Glasgow Science Centre (very popular with children) and the Lighthouse (Scotland's Centre for Architecture, Design and the City). Glasgow's Transport Museum is another favourite with children.

Glasgow's architecture is a wonderful mix of Georgian, Victorian and Art Deco (and a less wonderful mix of mistakes from the 1960s and '70s!). There is also lots of fabulous contemporary architecture - stunning futuristic glass and metal buildings. Of course if you are interested in architecture and design then you will want to visit many of Charles Rennie Mackintosh's buildings. There is a Mackintosh Trail (priced £10 and tickets from Glasgow tourist information centres) which gives you access to many of his buildings such as the Glasgow School of Art (the library is particularly wonderful) and House for an Art Lover. The Charles Rennie Mackintosh Society has lots of fascinating information about his work in Glasgow. I don't know of any self-catering accommodation in a Mackintosh building - please let me know if you find a holiday apartment in one! self-catering glasgow

Renting a Glasgow holiday cottage is an economical and convenient way to stay in the city. In some of the apartments you can stay for one night, and they all take weekend or short breaks. Located in the West End or city centre, you are right in the heart of Glasgow and easily placed to use public transport to get about. There is no need for a car in Glasgow as the bus and subway service are excellent.

Scotland isn't known for excellent cuisine but this has changed in recent years, and Glasgow boasts some top quality restaurants as well as good bistros and cafes. There is a busy nightlife with stylish bars and clubs. Shopping is the best in Scotland and international designers have come here as oppposed to Edinburgh. For a city break in the UK it is hard to beat Glasgow as a destination!
